Hadith 218

(حديث موقوف) قَرَأْتُ عَلَى قَرَأْتُ عَلَى يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ : زهير ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ مُضَرِّبٍ : أَنَّهُ حَجَّ مَعَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ، فَأَتَاهُ أَشْرَافُ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ ، فَقَالُوا : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، " إِنَّا أَصَبْنَا مِنْ أَمْوَالِنَا رَقِيقًا وَدَوَابَّ ، فَخُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِنَا صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُنَا بِهَا ، وَتَكُونُ لَنَا زَكَاةً ، فَقَالَ : هَذَا شَيْءٌ لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ اللَّذَانِ كَانَا مِنْ قَبْلِي ، وَلَكِنْ انْتَظِرُوا حَتَّى أَسْأَلَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ " .
Harithah bin Mudarrib says that he had the honor of performing Hajj with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Some dignitaries from Syria came to him and said, "O Commander of the Faithful! We have acquired some slaves and animals. Please collect zakat from our wealth so that our wealth may become purified and it may be a means of purification for us." He replied, "This action was not done by my two predecessors before me, so how can I do it? However, wait! I will consult with the Muslims."
