Hazrat Ibn ‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) and Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) were assigned to write the Qur’anic manuscripts. While writing, when they reached this verse, Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) recite this verse: "When any married man or woman commits adultery, then in any case, stone them." Upon this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when this verse was revealed, I was present before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and requested that this verse be written for me (but the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, did not consider it appropriate). Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) further said that in the words of this verse, see the word "Shaikh"; if any Shaikh (elderly man) is not married, then he is to be flogged, and if any young man, after being married, commits adultery, then he is to be stoned.
