Hazrat Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once I spent the night until morning in whispered conversation with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! Appoint me as a governor of some region." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is indeed a trust, and on the Day of Resurrection it will be a cause of disgrace and regret, except for the one who takes it with its due right and fulfills his responsibilities."
