It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to Hazrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "Famine has consumed us." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Which tribe do you belong to?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) kept inquiring about his lineage until he recognized him and found out that he was actually well-off financially. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "If a person has (one or two valleys) full of wealth and riches, he will still seek a third." Upon this, Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) added, "The belly of the son of Adam is filled only with dust. Then Allah turns with mercy to the one who repents." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "From whom did you hear this?" He replied, "From Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him)." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Come to me tomorrow." So the next day, he set out towards Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "What does Ibn Abbas say?" He replied, "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me in this way." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Shall I write it down?" He replied, "Yes." So he wrote it down.
