Hadith 21069

Qais says: We went to visit Hazrat Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was busy constructing his garden. Seeing us, he said, "A Muslim receives reward for everything except for what he plants in this soil." He had treated himself by cauterizing his stomach seven times and was saying, "If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not forbidden us from praying for death, I would surely have prayed for it, because my illness has become prolonged." And he said, "Our companions who have passed away, the world could not diminish their reward in the least, and as for us, whatever we received after them, we found no place for it except in the soil." It is narrated from Hazrat Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we presented ourselves in the court of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah, reclining on his cloak. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for us and seek help for us." Upon hearing this, the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned red and he said, "For those before you, pits would be dug for them as a punishment for accepting the religion, and saws would be placed on their heads and their heads would be split, but this would not turn them away from their religion. Similarly, iron combs would be driven into the flesh and nerves behind their bones, but this pain would not turn them away from their religion. And Allah will surely complete this religion until a rider will travel between Sana'a and Hadramaut fearing none but Allah, or the attack of a wolf on his sheep. But you people are hasty."
