حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنِ الْقِبْطِيَّةِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا نَقُولُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَلَّمْنَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ ، يُشِيرُ أَحَدُنَا بِيَدِهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ، وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا بَالُ الَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ الْخَيْلِ الشُّمْسِ ، أَلَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ، ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ، وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that we used to pray behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when turning to the right and left to say salam, we would gesture with our hands. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with people that they gesture with their hands like the tails of difficult horses? Can you not remain calm and gesture while your hand is on your thigh? Say salam to your companion on your right and left."
