It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the command regarding the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! What will happen to our brothers who passed away earlier and used to drink it before its prohibition? Upon this, the following verse was revealed: «﴿لَيْسَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ جُنَاحٌ فِيمَا طَعِمُوا ...﴾ [المائدة : 93]» "There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they consumed (or drank) before."
