حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَمَةَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَمَّارٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : أَتَى عَلَيَّ زَمَانٌ وَأَنَا أَقُولُ أَوْلَادُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ مَعَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ، وَأَوْلَادُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ، حَتَّى حَدَّثَنِي فُلَانٌ ، عَنْ فُلَانٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سُئِلَ عَنْهُمْ ، فَقَالَ : " اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا كَانُوا عَامِلِينَ " ، قَالَ : فَلَقِيتُ الرَّجُلَ ، فَأَخْبَرَنِي ، فَأَمْسَكْتُ عَنْ قَوْلِي .
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that at one time I held the opinion that the children of Muslims would be with the Muslims and the children of the polytheists would be with the polytheists, until a certain man narrated to me from another that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the children of the polytheists, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah knows best what deeds they would have done." Then I met another man and he also told me the same thing, so I withdrew from my opinion.
