حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ ، يُقَالُ لَهُ : عَمَّارٌ ، قَالَ : أَدْرَبْنَا عَامًا ، ثُمَّ قَفَلْنَا ، وَفِينَا شَيْخٌ مِنْ خَثْعَمٍ ، فَذُكِرَ الْحَجَّاجُ ، فَوَقَعَ فِيهِ ، وَشَتَمَهُ ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : لِمَ تَسُبُّهُ وَهُوَ يُقَاتِلُ أَهْلَ الْعِرَاقِ فِي طَاعَةِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ؟ فَقَالَ : إِنَّهُ هُوَ الَّذِي أَكْفَرَهُمْ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " يَكُونُ فِي هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ خَمْسُ فِتَنٍ ، فَقَدْ مَضَتْ أَرْبَعٌ وَبَقِيَتْ وَاحِدَةٌ ، وَهِيَ الصَّيْلَمُ ، وَهِيَ فِيكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الشَّامِ ، فَإِنْ أَدْرَكْتَهَا فَإِنْ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَكُونَ حَجَرًا فَكُنْهُ ، وَلَا تَكُنْ مَعَ وَاحِدٍ مِنَ الْفَرِيقَيْنِ ، أَلَا فَاتَّخِذْ نَفَقًا فِي الْأَرْضِ " ، وَقَدْ قَالَ حَمَّادٌ : " وَلَا تَكُنْ " ، وَقَدْ حَدَّثَنَا بِهِ حَمَّادٌ قَبْلَ ذَا ، قُلْتُ : أَأَنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قُلْتُ : يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ ، أَفَلَا كُنْتَ أَعْلَمْتَنِي أَنَّكَ رَأَيْتَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى أُسَائِلَكَ.
A man from the people of Sham whose name was Ammar says: One year we entered the land of the enemy and then returned from there. Among us was an elder from the tribe of Khath'am. When the mention of Hajjaj came up, he spoke very ill of him. I said to him, "Why are you speaking ill of him? He is fighting the people of Iraq in obedience to the Commander of the Faithful." He replied, "He is the very one who has led these people into disbelief. I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say that there will be five tribulations in this Ummah, four of which have passed and one remains, and that is the war that will uproot everything. O people of Sham, it will be among you. If you reach that time and have the ability to become like a stone, then do so, and do not be with either side, and seek your sustenance in the earth." I asked him, "Did you really hear this hadith from the Prophet (ﷺ)?" He replied, "Yes!" I said, "May Allah have mercy on you. If you had told me earlier that you had met the Prophet (ﷺ), I would have asked you something."
