حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ شَيْبَانَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا نَوْفَلِ بْنَ أَبِي عَقْرَبٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَأَلَ أَبِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الصَّوْمِ ، فَقَالَ " صُمْ يَوْمًا مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ " ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي ، زِدْنِي ، قَالَ : يَقُولُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " زِدْنِي زِدْنِي ! صُمْ يَوْمَيْنِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ " ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي زِدْنِي ، فَإِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا ، قَالَ : يَقُولُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا ، إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا ، إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي قَوِيًّا ! " قَالَ : فَأَلْحَمَ أَيْ أَمْسَكَ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ لَنْ يَزِيدَنِي ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ قَالَ : " صُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Aqrab that I asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about fasting, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Keep one fast every month. I said that I have the strength for more than that. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: What is this that you say you have the strength for more than that, the strength for more than that? Keep two fasts every month. I submitted: O Messenger of Allah, please increase it a little more. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: What is this that you say to increase it? Just keep three fasts every month.
