حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ الْعَطَّارُ ، حَدَّثَنَا بُدَيْلُ بْنُ مَيْسَرَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَطِيَّةَ مَوْلًى مِنَّا ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ الْحُوَيْرِثِ ، قَالَ : كَانَ يَأْتِينَا فِي مُصَلَّانَا ، فَلَمَّا أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ ، قِيلَ لَهُ : تَقَدَّمْ فَصَلِّهْ ، قَالَ : لِيُصَلِّ بَعْضُكُمْ حَتَّى أُحَدِّثَكُمْ لِمَ لَا أُصَلِّي بِكُمْ ، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى الْقَوْمُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " إِذَا زَارَ أَحَدُكُمْ قَوْمًا ، فَلَا يُصَلِّيَنَّ بِهِمْ يُصَلِّي بِهِمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ " .
Abu Atiyyah says that once Hazrat Malik bin Huwairith came to our mosque. When the prayer was established, the people requested him to lead the prayer, but he refused and said, "Let one of your own men lead the prayer." (Later I will tell you a hadith explaining why I am not leading you in prayer.) After the prayer, he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When a person visits a people, he should not lead them in prayer; rather, one of their own men should lead them in prayer."
