وَمِنْ حَدِيثِ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَAnd from the hadith of Samurah ibn Jundub about the Prophet (peace be upon him)

حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ , وَعَفَّانُ , قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ : أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ سورة البقرة آية 238 قَالَ عَفَّانُ : الصَّلَاةِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى سورة البقرة آية 238 , وَسَمَّاهَا لَنَا : " إِنَّمَا هِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once someone asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "What is meant by 'Salat al-Wusta'?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "The Asr prayer."
