Hadith 1980

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves and said, "They are being punished, and not for a major sin. One of them did not protect himself from urine splashes, and the other used to engage in tale-bearing." After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a branch, split it into two parts, and placed one part on each grave. The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Why did you do this?" He replied, "Perhaps their punishment will be lessened as long as these do not dry."
