حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، أَنْبَأَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ الْوَاسِطِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَرْزَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِآخِرَةٍ إِذَا طَالَ الْمَجْلِسُ فَقَامَ قَالَ : " سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ " ، فَقَالَ لَهُ بَعْضُنَا : إِنَّ هَذَا قَوْلٌ مَا كُنَّا نَسْمَعُهُ مِنْكَ فِيمَا خَلَا ! فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَذَا كَفَّارَةُ مَا يَكُونُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the last days of his life, when any gathering would become lengthy, at the end, while standing up, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaik." On one occasion, one of us said, "We have never heard this phrase from you before?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "It is an expiation for the sins committed in the gathering."
