حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قال : حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُقَدَّمٍ ، قال : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُمَيْسٍ ، عَن سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَن أَبِيهِ ، عَن أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَتَانِي نَاسٌ مِنَ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ ، فَقَالُوا : اذْهَبْ مَعَنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَإِنَّ لَنَا حَاجَةً ، قَالَ : فَقُمْتُ مَعَهُمْ ، فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، اسْتَعِنْ بِنَا فِي عَمَلِكَ ، فَاعْتَذَرْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِمَّا قَالُوا ، وَقُلْتُ : لَمْ أَدْرِ مَا حَاجَتُهُمْ ، فَصَدَّقَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَعَذَرَنِي ، وَقَالَ : " إِنَّا لَا نَسْتَعِينُ فِي عَمَلِنَا مَنْ سَأَلَنَاهُ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that once some Ash'ari people came to me and said, "Come with us to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we have some work with him." I went with them, and there they asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for a position. I apologized to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding their request and said that I had no knowledge of their need. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) affirmed my statement and accepted my excuse, and said, "We do not give any position to a person who asks us for it."
