حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قال : حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، قال : حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ ، عَن أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، قال : قال أَبُو مُوسَى : سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ ، أَوْ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسٌ مُنَكِّسٌ رَأْسَهُ ، فَقَالَ : مَا الْقِتَالُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ؟ فَإِنَّ أَحَدَنَا يُقَاتِلُ حَمِيَّةً وَغَضَبًا ، فَلَهُ أَجْرٌ ؟ قَالَ : فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَيْهِ ، وَلَوْلَا أَنَّهُ كَانَ قَائِمًا ، أَوْ كَانَ قَاعِدًا الشَّكُّ مِنْ زُهَيْرٍ مَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : " مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا ، فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) Tell me, a man fights to prove his bravery, a man fights out of national pride, and a man fights for show (ostentation). Among these, who is the one fighting in the way of Allah?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had his head lowered. Upon hearing his question, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head. If he had not been standing, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not have raised his head to look at him. And the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The one who fights so that the word of Allah may be exalted, he is the one fighting in the way of Allah."
