حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، وَعَفَّانُ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو ابْنِ مُرَّةَ ، قَالَ عَفَّانُ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا وَائِلٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ، أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، الرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِلْمَغْنَمِ ، وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيُذْكَرَ ، وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيُرَى مَكَانُهُ ، فَمَنْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا ، فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Tell me, one man fights for war booty, another fights to prove his bravery, and another fights for show (ostentation); among them, who is the one fighting in the way of Allah?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The one who fights so that the word of Allah is exalted, he is the one fighting in the way of Allah."
