Hadith 19531

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Charity is obligatory upon every Muslim. Someone asked, "Tell us, what if a person has nothing?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He should work with his own hands, benefit himself, and also give charity. The questioner asked, "Tell us, what if he is not able to do that?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He should help someone in need or a distressed person. The questioner asked, "What if a person cannot even do that?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He should enjoin good or justice. The questioner asked, "What if he cannot even do that?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then he should restrain himself from harming anyone; that is his charity.
