Abdur Rahman bin Abzi says that a man came to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I am required to perform ghusl, but I cannot find water." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Do not pray." Hazrat Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Do you not remember that you and I were in an army, and both of us were required to perform ghusl and could not find water? So you did not pray, but I rolled in the dust and performed the prayer. Then when we came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I mentioned this incident to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said, 'Clean earth would have been enough for you.' Saying this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his hands on the ground, blew on them, and wiped them over his face and hands." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Ammar! Fear Allah." He said, "O Commander of the Faithful! If you say so, I will never narrate this hadith again until I die." He said, "Never! We leave you to what you choose."
