It is narrated from Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Tell me of an action that will admit me into Paradise.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “You have spoken briefly, but you have asked a very broad question. Free a slave (‘Itq Nasmah) and help in freeing a slave (Fakk Raqabah).” He said, “O Messenger of Allah! Are these two not the same thing? (Because both mean freeing a slave.)” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No. ‘Itq Nasmah means that you alone free a complete slave, and Fakk Raqabah means that you help in the freedom of a slave. In the same way, do good and show kindness to a close relative who is an oppressor. If you do not have the strength for this, then feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. If you cannot do even this, then restrain your tongue except for good.”
