It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once during the Prophetic era, there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood with his companions, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began the prayer and recited a long surah, then performed bowing (ruku‘), then raised his head and recited again, then performed bowing and did two prostrations (sujood), then stood up and recited, bowed and did two prostrations. In this way, there were four bowings and four prostrations in two rak‘ahs.
