It is narrated from Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the month of Dhu al-Qa’dah, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Umrah, but the people of Makkah prevented him from entering Makkah until the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a treaty with them on the condition that he would stay in Makkah for only three days. When people sat down to write the document of this agreement, they wrote in it the words “Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah” (peace and blessings be upon him), but the polytheists said, “Do not write this word, because if you were the Messenger of Allah, we would never have fought you.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), “Erase this word.” Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I cannot erase it.” So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) erased it himself with his blessed hand, even though the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not learned to read or write, and in its place wrote: “This is the decision which Muhammad bin Abdullah has made with the people of Makkah, that they will not bring any weapons into Makkah except a sword in its sheath, they will not take anyone out of Makkah except if someone himself wishes to go with them, and they will not prevent any of their companions from staying in Makkah.” So, after entering Makkah, when three days had passed, the polytheists of Makkah came to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Tell your companion to depart, for the period has been completed.” So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.
