حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ أَبِي ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : جَلَسَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَفِي يَدِهِ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ، فَقَرَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَهُ بِقَضِيبٍ كَانَ فِي يَدِهِ ، ثُمَّ غَفَلَ عَنْهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَرَمَى الرَّجُلُ بِخَاتَمِهِ ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَيْنَ خَاتَمُكَ ؟ قَالَ : أَلْقَيْتُهُ . فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَظُنُّنَا قَدْ أَوْجَعْنَاكَ وَأَغْرَمْنَاكَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a gold ring in his hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to move his hand with his stick. Meanwhile, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his attention elsewhere, he took off his ring and threw it away. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked again, the ring was not seen on his finger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Perhaps we have caused you trouble and made you indebted."
