Hadith 17737

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself in the court of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) Please write in my name such-and-such land in Syria, upon which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has not yet prevailed.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), “Do you not hear what he is saying?” Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “By Him in Whose hand is my life, you will surely prevail over it.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a document to that effect and gave it to him. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) We are hunters (please tell us the rulings regarding hunting).” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “When you send your trained dog for hunting and recite ‘Bismillah’, then whatever it hunts, you may eat it.” I asked, “Even if the dog has killed the prey?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Yes, even if it has killed it. And if it is not trained and you are able to slaughter it, then slaughter it and eat it. Whatever your bow returns to you, you may eat it.” I said, “We live in the area of Jews and Christians; they eat pork and drink wine. How should we use their pots and utensils?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If you do not find any utensils except theirs, then wash them with water, then you may eat and drink in them.” Then I asked, “O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) What is lawful and what is unlawful for us?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not eat domesticated donkeys and any predatory animal that hunts with its fangs.”
