It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Khariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the sacrificial animal that is near death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Slaughter it, dye its hoof in its blood, and apply it to its forehead or side, and neither you nor your companions should eat anything from it; rather, leave it among the people.
