حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ الْحَضْرَمِيَّ يَذْكُرُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ ، فَقَالَ : " الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ ، وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Nawas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about virtue and sin. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Virtue is good character, and sin is that which pricks your heart and you dislike that people should come to know of it.
