حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مُلَيْلٍ السَّلِيحِيُّ ، وَهُمْ إِلَى قُضَاعَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مَعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ جَالِسًا قَرِيبًا مِنَ الْمِنْبَرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، فَخَرَجَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ ، فَاسْتَوَى عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ، فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةً مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ، قَالَ : وَكَانَ مِنْ أَقْرَإِ النَّاسِ قَالَ : فَقَالَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ : صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " لَيَقْرَأَنَّ الْقُرْآنَ رِجَالٌ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ " .
Abdul Malik bin Maleel says that once on a Friday I was sitting near the pulpit with Hazrat Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him), when Muhammad bin Abi Hudhaifah came and sat on the pulpit and began to deliver a sermon. Then he recited a surah from the Holy Qur'an, and he was an excellent reciter. Hazrat Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that many people will recite the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their throats; they will go out of the religion just as an arrow passes out of the prey.
