Abu’l-Hawra Sa‘di says: I asked Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), “Do you remember any sayings of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?” He replied, “I remember that once I picked up a date from the charity and put it in my mouth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it out along with my saliva and put it back with the other dates. A man said, ‘If he had eaten this one date, what would have happened? Would you have let him eat it?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘We do not eat from charity.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to say: ‘Leave that which causes you doubt for that which does not cause you doubt. Truthfulness brings tranquility, and lying brings doubt.’ Likewise, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us this supplication: «اَللّٰهُمَّ اهْدِنِي فِيمَنْ هَدَيْتَ وَعَافِنِي فِيمَنْ عَافَيْتَ وَتَوَلَّنِي فِيمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَ وَقِنِي شَرَّ مَا قَضَيْتَ إِنَّهُ لَا يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ تَبَارَكْتَ رَبَّنَا وَتَعَالَيْتَ» ‘O Allah! Include me among those whom You have guided, include me among those whom You have granted well-being, include me among those whom You have taken into Your care, and bless for me what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Whoever You befriend cannot be humiliated, and O our Lord! You are Most Blessed and Most Exalted.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to say: ‘Leave that which causes you doubt for that which does not cause you doubt. Truthfulness brings tranquility, and lying brings doubt.’ Likewise, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us this supplication: ‘O Allah, include me among those whom You have guided, include me among those whom You have granted well-being, include me among those whom You have taken into Your care, and bless for me what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed.
