حَدَّثَنَا عِصَامُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرِيزُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ سَعِيد بْنِ مَرْثَدٍ الرَّحَبِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ حَوْشَبٍ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ بْنِ شَهْرٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ كُرَيْبَ بْنَ أَبْرَهَةَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ مَعَ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ بِدَيْرِ الْمُرَّانِ ، وَذَكَرَ الْكِبْرَ ، فَقَالَ كُرَيْبٌ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا رَيْحَانَةَ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " لَا يَدْخُلُ شَيْءٌ مِنَ الْكِبْرِ الْجَنَّةَ " ، فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَتَجَمَّلَ بِحَبْلَانِ سَوْطِي ، وَشِسْعِ نَعْلِي ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَيْسَ بِالْكِبْرِ ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ جَمِيلٌ يُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ ، إِنَّمَا الْكِبْرُ مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ ، وَغَمَصَ النَّاسَ بِعَيْنَيْهِ " ، يَعْنِي بِالْحَبْلَانِ سَيْرَ السَّوْطِ وَشِسْعَ النَّعْلِ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rayhanah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I once heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Not even the smallest portion of arrogance will enter Paradise." A person asked: "O Messenger of Allah! I like that my mount and the strap of my sandals be fine (is this also arrogance?)" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "This is not arrogance. Allah Almighty is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is that a person does not accept the truth and looks down upon people."
