Hadith 17165

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ مِغْوَلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَامِرٍ الْأَشْعَرِيّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَجُلٌ قُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ بِأَوْطَاسٍ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا أَبَا عَامِرٍ ، أَلَا غَيَّرْتَ ؟ " فَتَلَا هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ : يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ سورة المائدة آية 105 فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَقَالَ : " أَيْنَ ذَهَبْتُمْ ؟ ! إِنَّمَا هِيَ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Amir Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that one of his men was killed in the Battle of Autas. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amir! Did you not feel any sense of honor?" Sayyiduna Abu Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you are guided, no one who goes astray can harm you." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: "Where are you going (with this)? The meaning of the verse is: O believers! If you are guided, misguided disbelievers will not be able to harm you."
