Hadith 1697

(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبَانُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ ، عَنْ رَابِّهِ رَجُلٍ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ ، كَانَ خَلَفَ عَلَى أُمِّهِ بَعْدَ أَبِيهِ ، كَانَ شَهِدَ طَاعُونَ عَمَوَاسَ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا اشْتَعَلَ الْوَجَعُ قَامَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ فِي النَّاسِ خَطِيبًا ، فَقَالَ : " أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْوَجَعَ رَحْمَةُ رَبِّكُمْ َدَعْوَةُ نَبِيِّكُمْ ، وَمَوْتُ الصَّالِحِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ ، وَإِنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ يَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ ، أَنْ يَقْسِمَ لَهُ مِنْهُ حَظَّهُ ؟ قَالَ : فَطُعِنَ ، فَمَاتَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ ، وَاسْتُخْلِفَ عَلَى النَّاسِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ ، فَقَامَ خَطِيبًا بَعْدَهُ ، فَقَالَ : أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْوَجَعَ رَحْمَةُ رَبِّكُمْ ، وَدَعْوَةُ نَبِيِّكُمْ ، وَمَوْتُ الصَّالِحِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ ، وَإِنَّ مُعَاذًا ، يَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ ، أَنْ يَقْسِمَ لِآلِ مُعَاذٍ مِنْهُ حَظَّهُ ؟ قَالَ : فَطُعِنَ ابْنُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ، فَمَاتَ ، ثُمَّ قَامَ ، فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ لِنَفْسِهِ ، فَطُعِنَ فِي رَاحَتِهِ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا ، ثُمَّ يُقَبِّلُ ظَهْرَ كَفِّهِ ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ : مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي بِمَا فِيكِ شَيْئًا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا ، فَلَمَّا مَاتَ اسْتُخْلِفَ عَلَى النَّاسِ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ ، فَقَامَ فِينَا خَطِيبًا , فَقَالَ : أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْوَجَعَ إِذَا وَقَعَ ، فَإِنَّمَا يَشْتَعِلُ اشْتِعَالَ النَّارِ ، فَتَجَبَّلُوا مِنْهُ فِي الْجِبَالِ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو وَاثِلَةَ الْهُذَلِيُّ : كَذَبْتَ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ صَحِبْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنْتَ شَرٌّ مِنْ حِمَارِي هَذَا ، قَالَ وَاللَّهِ مَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ ، مَا تَقُولُ ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَا نُقِيمُ عَلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ وَخَرَجَ النَّاسُ ، فَتَفَرَّقُوا عَنْهُ وَدَفَعَهُ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ ، قَالَ : فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْ رَأْيِ عَمْرٍو ، فَوَاللَّهِ مَا كَرِهَهُ ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْد اللَّهِ بْن أَحْمَد بْن حَنْبَلٍ : أَبَانُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ جَدُّ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مُشْكُدَانَةَ .
An eyewitness to the incident of the plague of Amwas narrates that when the suffering of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) intensified, he stood before the people to deliver a sermon and said: O people! This affliction is the mercy of your Lord, the call of your Prophet, and the death that befell the righteous before you, and Abu Ubaidah prays to Allah to grant him his share from it. Thus, he was martyred in this very plague. May Allah have mercy on him. After him, Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) took over his position and, delivering a sermon, said: O people! This affliction is the mercy of your Lord, the call of your Prophet, and the death that befell the righteous before you, and Mu'adh prays to Allah to grant the family of Mu'adh their share from it. Consequently, his son Abdur Rahman contracted this disease and was martyred. Then Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up again and prayed for himself, so a plague sore appeared on his palm. I have seen him looking at this plague sore, kissing his palm, and saying repeatedly: Even if I were given the whole world in exchange for this, I would not be pleased. In any case, he too was martyred. After him, Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed as their deputy. He stood and delivered a sermon, saying: O people! When this affliction comes, it starts to blaze like fire, so protect yourselves from it by going to the mountains. Upon hearing this, Abu Wathilah Hudhali said: Despite being a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), you are not saying the right thing. By Allah! You are worse than my donkey. He replied: I will not answer you, but by Allah! We will not remain in this state. Thus, he left that area, and the people also dispersed and left, and in this way, Allah removed this disease from them. Someone who witnessed Sayyiduna Amr's (may Allah be pleased with him) decision informed Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, and he did not express any displeasure over it.
