Hadith 1696

Once, a man came to meet Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw that he was crying. He asked him the reason for his weeping, so Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am crying because one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the victories that would come to the Muslims and the spoils of war that would be obtained. During this, the mention of Syria also came up, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Abu Ubaidah! If you live to see that time, consider only three servants sufficient for yourself: one for yourself, one to accompany you on your travels, and one for your family to serve them and fulfill their needs. And consider three mounts sufficient for yourself: one animal for your own riding, one for your luggage and load, and one for your servant." But now when I look at my house, it appears to me to be filled with servants; when I glance at my stable, it appears to me to be filled with mounts and horses. In this situation, with what face will I meet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? While the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had advised us: "The most beloved and the closest to me among you in my sight will be the one who meets me in the same state in which he parted from me."
