حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْيَحْصَبِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّمَا أَنَا خَازِنٌ ، وَإِنَّمَا يُعْطِي اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، فَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ ، فَإِنَّهُ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ فِيهِ ، وَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً بِشَرَهِ نَفْسٍ ، وَشَرَهِ مَسْأَلَةٍ ، فَهُوَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ فَلَا يَشْبَعُ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: I am only a treasurer; the real giver is Allah. Therefore, if I give something to a person with a happy heart, it will be made blessed for him. But if I give something to someone to protect myself from his evil, or because of his insistence in asking, then it is like the one who keeps eating but is never satisfied.
