Iyad bin Ghatif says that once Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill. We went to visit him, and his wife—whose name was Tahifah—was sitting near his head. We asked her how his night had passed. She said: "By Allah! He has spent the whole night with reward and recompense." Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have not spent the whole night with reward." At first, his face was turned towards the wall, but now he turned his face towards the people and said: "Do you not ask me about what I have said?" The people said: "If we were surprised by your statement, we would have asked you." He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever spends his surplus wealth in the way of Allah, its reward will be seven hundred times. Whoever spends on himself and his family, visits a sick person, or removes something harmful from the road, for every good deed there will be ten rewards. And fasting is a shield, provided that a person does not tear it. And whoever Allah tests physically, it becomes a cause of forgiveness for him.'"
