Humaid says that he once heard Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah Munawwarah during a sermon saying: O people of Madinah! Where have your scholars gone? I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: This is the day of Ashura, fasting on it is not obligatory upon us, so whoever among you wishes to fast may do so, and I am fasting. Upon this, the people also fasted. Then he took a bunch of hair in his hands and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbidding such things and saying that punishment came upon the Children of Israel only when their women made this their occupation.

And I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbidding something like this, and he took out a lock of hair from his sleeve and said: "The children of Israel were only destroyed when their women took to such things."
