It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once he was discussing an issue of prayer with Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him). While they were talking, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared from the front. He said, "Shall I not tell you a hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) which I myself heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" They replied, "Why not." So he narrated this hadith: "If a person is in doubt about the number of rak‘ahs in prayer, he should continue praying until he is certain about the excess."
