Hadith 1683

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) once set out towards Syria. When he reached the place of Sargh, the commanders of the army, including Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), came to meet him. They informed Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that a plague had spread in Syria. After mentioning the complete hadith, the narrator said that then Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived—he had gone somewhere for some need—and said, "I have certain knowledge about this. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'When this plague spreads in any area and you are already there, do not flee from it, and if you are not there, do not go to that area.'" Upon this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) thanked Allah and returned.
