الْأَصَمُّ يَعْنِي يَزِيدَ بْنَ الْأَصَمِّ ، عَنْ
مَيْمُونَةَ ، وَكَانَ فِي حَجْرِهَا
It is narrated from Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he entered the house of Ummul Momineen Hazrat Maymunah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her)—who was his maternal aunt—along with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She placed before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the meat of a lizard, which had been brought from Najd by Umm Hafeed bint Harith, who was married to a man from Banu Ja’far. It was the blessed habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he would not eat anything until he had asked what it was. So, one of his wives said, “Why don’t you tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what he is eating?” Upon this, they informed him that it was the meat of a lizard. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left it. Hazrat Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) says, “I asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is it forbidden?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “No! But it is not the food of my people, so I prefer to be cautious about it.” So I pulled it towards myself and began to eat it, and meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept watching me.
