Hadith 1668

Abdullah bin Aamir says that once we were going to Makkah Mukarramah. In the middle of the night, the voice of Ibn Mutarraf—the camel driver—reached the ears of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made his mount sit down and entered among the people. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present there. When dawn broke, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Now stop, now be silent because dawn has broken; now remember Allah. Then Sayyiduna Umar al-Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) noticed the socks of Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: You are wearing socks? He replied: I wore them even in the presence of the one who was better than you. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by Allah, take off these socks, because I fear that if people see you, they will start following you.
