It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that a tribe of Arabs came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah Munawwarah. They accepted Islam, but the climate of Madinah did not suit them, so they were afflicted with severe fever and this calamity befell them. Consequently, they left Madinah Munawwarah, and on the way, they encountered some of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). The Companions asked them, "Why are you returning?" They replied, "The climate there did not suit us and we have developed stomach illnesses." The Companions said, "Is there not an example for you in the person of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" At this, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) became divided into two groups: some declared them hypocrites, while others said, "They are not hypocrites, rather they are Muslims." Upon this, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: «﴿فَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِئَتَيْنِ وَاللّٰهُ أَرْكَسَهُم بِمَا كَسَبُوا﴾ [النساء : 88]» "What is [the matter] with you [that] you are two groups concerning the hypocrites, while Allah has made them fall back [into error and disbelief] for what they earned."
