Sayyiduna Dhi’l-Jawshan (may Allah be pleased with him) says that before accepting Islam, I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) after he had finished with the people of Badr. I brought with me the foal of my horse. I came and said, “O Muhammad! I have brought to you the foal of my horse Qarha so that you may buy it.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “At the moment, I have no need for it. However, if you wish, I can give you selected armors from Badr in exchange for it.” I said, “Today, I would not give this horse even in exchange for a slave.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Then I have no need for it either.” Then he said, “O Dhi’l-Jawshan! Why do you not become a Muslim so that you may be among the earliest people of this religion?” I said, “No.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Why?” I said, “I have seen that your people have deprived you of your right.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, “Have you not heard anything regarding those killed at Badr?” I said, “I know about it. Will you be able to overcome and subdue Makkah?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “If you live, you will surely see that day.” Then he said to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), “Bilal! Take his bag and fill it with Ajwa dates so that he may have provision for the journey.” When I turned my back and started to return, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “He is the best among the horsemen of Banu Amir.” I was still pondering with my family when a horseman came. I asked him, “Where are you coming from?” He said, “From Makkah.” I asked, “What is the condition of the people?” He said, “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has overcome them.” I expressed regret and said, “If I had become Muslim that day and had asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for the city named Hira, he would have given it to me.” Sayyiduna Dhi’l-Jawshan (may Allah be pleased with him) says that before accepting Islam, I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) after he had finished with the people of Badr. Then the narrator mentioned the entire hadith.
