(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ نُعَيْمٍ بن مُجْمِرِ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَخْدُمُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَقُومُ لَهُ فِي حَوَائِجِهِ نَهَارِي أَجْمَعَ ، حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ ، فَأَجْلِسُ بِبَابِهِ إِذَا دَخَلَ بَيْتَهُ أَقُولُ : لَعَلَّهَا أَنْ تَحْدُثَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَاجَةٌ ، فَمَا أَزَالُ أَسْمَعُهُ يَقُولُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ " حَتَّى أَمَلَّ ، فَأَرْجِعَ أَوْ تَغْلِبَنِي عَيْنِي ، فَأَرْقُدَ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ لِي يَوْمًا : لِمَا يَرَى مِنْ خِفَّتِي لَهُ ، وَخِدْمَتِي إِيَّاهُ " سَلْنِي يَا رَبِيعَةُ أُعْطِكَ " ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : أَنْظُرُ فِي أَمْرِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، ثُمَّ أُعْلِمُكَ ذَلِكَ ، قَالَ : فَفَكَّرْتُ فِي نَفْسِي ، فَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّ الدُّنْيَا مُنْقَطِعَةٌ وزَائِلَةٌ ، وَأَنَّ لِي فِيهَا رِزْقًا سَيَكْفِينِي وَيَأْتِينِي ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : أَسْأَلُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِآخِرَتِي ، فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِالْمَنْزِلِ الَّذِي هُوَ بِهِ ، قَالَ : فَجِئْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " مَا فَعَلْتَ يَا رَبِيعَةُ ؟ " ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَشْفَعَ لِي إِلَى رَبِّكَ ، فَيُعْتِقَنِي مِنَ النَّارِ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : " مَنْ أَمَرَكَ بِهَذَا يَا رَبِيعَةُ ؟ " ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : لَا وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي بَعَثَكِ بِالْحَقِّ ، مَا أَمَرَنِي بِهِ أَحَدٌ ، وَلَكِنَّكَ لَمَّا قُلْتَ : سَلْنِي أُعْطِكَ ، وَكُنْتَ مِنَ اللَّهِ بِالْمَنْزِلِ الَّذِي أَنْتَ بِهِ ، نَظَرْتُ فِي أَمْرِي وَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّ الدُّنْيَا مُنْقَطِعَةٌ وَزَائِلَةٌ ، وَأَنَّ لِي فِيهَا رِزْقًا سَيَأْتِينِي ، فَقُلْتُ : أَسْأَلُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِآخِرَتِي ، قَالَ : فَصَمَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَوِيلًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي : " إِنِّي فَاعِلٌ ، فَأَعِنِّي عَلَى نَفْسِكَ بِكَثْرَةِ السُّجُودِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rabi’ah bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) that I used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and would remain engaged in his work all day long. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would offer the ‘Isha prayer and go to his house, I would sit at his door and think that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) might need something. I would continuously hear the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying “Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi” until I would get tired and return or fall asleep due to drowsiness. Once, seeing my service and how I was exhausting myself, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: “Ask, I will grant you.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah! Give me some time to think.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “You may think it over.” I thought that the life of this world will pass away anyway, so I did not find anything better for myself than the Hereafter. Thus, I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: “What is your need?” I said: “O Messenger of Allah! Please intercede with your Lord for me that He may grant me a certificate of freedom from Hell.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: “Who told you this?” I said: “O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, no one explained this to me, but I myself reflected on my situation that the world is even taken away from the people of the world, so I thought I should make a request for the Hereafter.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Then help me by making many prostrations.”
