Hadith 16374

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh that I heard with my own ears the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying this, and I saw with my own eyes: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbor well. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest according to what is right. The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by "according to what is right"? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Hospitality is for three days, and "according to what is right" (a special, elaborate invitation) is only for one day and one night. Whatever is beyond that is charity upon him. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good words or remain silent. And it is not permissible for any man to stay with someone to such an extent that he makes him sinful.
