It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Talha that on the day of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that twenty-four leaders of Quraysh be thrown into a dirty and foul-smelling well at Badr. It was the blessed habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he gained dominance over a people, he liked to stay there for three days. Thus, on the third day of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went towards them and we also went along. We thought that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was going to relieve himself, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the edge of the well and began to call them by their names, saying, "Did you find the promise of your Lord to be true? For I have found the promise of my Lord to be true." Sayyiduna Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah! Are you speaking to bodies in which there are no souls at all?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "By Him Who sent me with the truth, what I am saying to them, you do not hear it more than they do."
