Abu Ubaid says that once, on the occasion of Eid, I was present in the service of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He led the prayer before the sermon, then said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on these two days. On the day of Eid al-Fitr, because on that day your fasting ends, and on the day of Eid al-Adha, so that you may eat the meat of your sacrificial animal.
