Hadith 16207

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mirdas that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed abundantly for forgiveness and mercy for his Ummah on the night of Arafah. Allah answered the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that He had accepted his prayer and forgiven his Ummah, except for those who wrong one another; He would not forgive them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Lord, You are able to forgive the oppressor and grant the oppressed the best recompense for the wrong done to him." That night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to pray in this manner. The next day, when he began to pray in the morning at Muzdalifah, he again made the same supplication. Shortly after, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to smile. A companion asked: "O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, you do not usually smile at this time. May Allah always keep you smiling, what makes you smile?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "I smiled when I saw Allah's enemy, Iblis. When he learned that Allah had accepted my prayer regarding my Ummah and had promised to forgive even the oppressor, he began to cry out in despair and ruin, throwing dust on his head and fleeing. Seeing his condition made me smile."
