(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ سَهْلُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ : اتَّهِمُوا رَأْيَكُمْ ، فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا يَوْمَ أَبِي جَنْدَلٍ وَلَوْ نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَرُدَّ أَمْرَهُ لَرَدَدْنَاهُ ، وَاللَّهِ مَا وَضَعْنَا سُيُوفَنَا عَنْ عَوَاتِقِنَا مُنْذُ أَسْلَمْنَا لِأَمْرٍ يُفْظِعُنَا إِلَّا أَسْهَلَ بِنَا إِلَى أَمْرٍ نَعْرِفُهُ ، إِلَّا هَذَا الْأَمْرَ مَا سَدَدْنَا خَصْمًا إِلَّا انْفَتَحَ لَنَا خَصْمٌ آخَرُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif that do not always consider your own opinion to be correct. I witnessed the day of Abu Jandal; if we had the courage to reject any command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), we would have done so on that day. By Allah, after accepting Islam, whenever we laid down our swords in a distressing matter, it became easy for us—except in the case that whenever we blocked the way for one party, the way for the other would open.
