It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Salamah, who was among the Companions of Badr, that we had a Jewish neighbor among the Banu Abd al-Ashhal. One day, shortly before the Prophet’s (ﷺ) appointment, he came out of his house and stopped by the gathering place of Banu Abd al-Ashhal. At that time, I was young and had wrapped myself in a sheet, lying in the courtyard of my house. That Jew began to speak about resurrection after death, the Day of Judgment, the reckoning, the weighing of deeds, and Paradise and Hell. He was saying this to those idolaters and polytheists who did not believe in life after death. So they said to him, “O so-and-so, woe to you! Do you think that people will be resurrected after death and transferred to a place called Paradise or Hell, where they will be recompensed for their deeds?” He replied, “Yes, by the One in whose name oaths are sworn, I would prefer that a huge oven be kindled in this world, and I be put into it and it be closed over me, rather than face the Fire of Hell tomorrow.” The people asked, “What is the sign of this?” He replied, “The sign is a Prophet (ﷺ) who will be sent from these lands,” and he pointed towards Makkah and Yemen. They asked, “When will he appear?” The Jew looked at me, for I was the youngest among them, and said, “If this boy lives, he will surely see him.” Sayyiduna Salamah says, “Not even a full day and night had passed before Allah sent His Messenger. That Jew was still alive among us. We believed in the Prophet (ﷺ), but he persisted in disbelief out of arrogance and envy. We said to him, ‘O so-and-so, woe to you! Are you not the one who gave such a long speech about this Prophet?’ He replied, ‘Yes, but I will never believe in him.’”
