(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَيْسٌ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سَعْدَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنِّي لَأَوَّلُ الْعَرَبِ رَمَى بِسَهْمٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَلَقَدْ أَتَيْنَا نَغْزُو مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَمَا لَنَا طَعَامٌ نَأْكُلُهُ إِلَّا وَرَقَ الْحُبْلَةِ ، وَهَذَا السَّمُرَ ، حَتَّى إِنَّ أَحَدَنَا لَيَضَعُ كَمَا تَضَعُ الشَّاةُ مَا لَهُ خِلْطٌ ، ثُمَّ أَصْبَحَتْ بَنُو أَسَدٍ يُعَزِّرُونِي عَلَى الدِّينِ ، لَقَدْ خِبْتُ إِذَاً ، وَضَلَّ عَمَلِي " .
Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I am the very first man among the Arabs who shot an arrow in the path of Allah. We witnessed a time when we used to fight in jihad alongside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that time we had nothing to eat except the branches of grapevines and the leaves of acacia trees. Each one of us would pass stool like a goat does, with nothing else mixed in it. And today, the people of Banu Asad reproach me for my Islam—if that is the case, then I have suffered a great loss and all my efforts have been wasted.
