Abdur Rahman bin Bilmani says that once four companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) gathered together somewhere. One of them said, "I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that if a servant repents even before dying, Allah accepts his repentance." The second asked, "Did you really hear the Prophet (peace be upon him) say this?" The first replied, "Yes." The second said, "I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that if a servant repents even half a day before dying, Allah accepts his repentance." The third asked, "Did you really hear the Prophet (peace be upon him) say this?" The second replied in the affirmative. Upon this, the third said, "I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that if a servant repents even a quarter of a day before dying, Allah accepts his repentance." The fourth asked, "Did you really hear the Prophet (peace be upon him) say this?" The third replied in the affirmative. Upon this, the fourth said, "I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that as long as the pangs of death have not overtaken the servant, Allah accepts his repentance until that time."
